Somewhere near Soledad, it doesn't really give me a time period but the book was written in 1937.
List words that describe Lennie.
Large. Stupid. Caring.
List words that describe George.
Small. Short-tempered.
To what animal is Lennie compared?
Terrier ("Like a terrier that doesn't want to bring the ball to his master")
To what animal would you compare George? Why?
Harley. Cuz he's mean and does stupid things but means well.
Why were George and Lennie run out of Weed?
Grabbed a girl's dress and panicked and it was misunderstood.
What things does Lennie do and say that make him like a child?
Lets his emotions get the better of him.
Where does George tell Lennie to hide if he gets in trouble?
In the brush near the river.
How does Steinbeck convey Lennie's animal-like qualities? (#4 above)
With descriptive words.
Why does Steinbeck describe the actions of Lennie's hands (foreshadowing their importance)
To convey that they are large and desctructive (usually not intentionally desctructive)
What is George's attitude toward Lennie in this section? Why does he stay with Lennie?
Lennie's a burden but he needs help and wouldn't be able to survive very long on his own. He looks out for him.
Explain the connection between Lennie's mouse and what happened in Weed.
He means well but he doesn't think everything through. He likes the way things feel and forgets there's consequences to grabbing onto something as hard as he's capable of doing.
Describe George's dreams in this section.
A little out there. But he means well and wants Lennie to be happy.
What suggests that the dream of the farm is unrealistic?
They don't have very much money and Lennie probably wouldn't be very good at tending the rabbits because of how forceful his own hands can be.
Give some examples of foreshadowing in this section.
It's really just the mouse-killing and the "if something happens..." thing.
